India’s Network Planning Group (NPG) constituted under the PM GatiShakti initiative has so far recommended 106 infrastructure projects of different ministries worth ₹11 lakh crore for approval in this fiscal. This was revealed at the 55th NPG meeting held recently.

Six projects—three each from the railways and road transport and highways ministries—with a total cost of ₹14,081 crore were assessed at the latest meeting, the commerce and industry ministry said in a release.

The inter-ministerial NPG meets every fortnight and appraises infrastructure projects to ensure multi-modality, synchronisation of efforts and comprehensive development in and around the project location.

NPG approval is needed before project clearance by the Public Investment Board or the department of expenditure under the finance ministry.

Forty road projects with a total investment of ₹3.65 lakh crore, 40 railway projects worth ₹95,704 crore and eight urban development projects valued at ₹79,016 crore have been approved.

A greenfield railway line project alignment passes through West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand, while another such line is located in Odisha, which will be an alternate and shorter alignment to existing railway line and shall help in decongestion of existing track. The third railway line is located in Gujarat.

The railway projects are expected to reduce the overall logistics cost by offering shorter routes and reducing the traffic congestion on existing railway lines, the official release added.
