The government has decided to develop container terminal-1 at Payra Port through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), following a recent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by finance minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali.

Media reports claimed this adding the CCEA granted initial approval to a proposal from the Payra Port Authority (PPA), submitted by the Ministry of Shipping.

This decision marks a significant step toward enhancing Bangladesh’s maritime infrastructure.

Payra Port, established in 2013 in Patuakhali district, aims to alleviate congestion at the Chittagong Port and bolster the country’s transportation network.

It plays a pivotal role in facilitating international trade, handling a substantial portion of Bangladesh’s imports and exports.

The development of container terminal-1 at Payra Port is driven by several objectives outlined by the PPA, including providing a vital trade gateway, enhancing service quality, expanding facilities, and easing pressure on existing ports.

Moreover, it aims to enhance the competitiveness of Bangladesh’s exports by reducing shipping times and costs, benefiting exporters financially.

Bangladesh’s coastline offers immense potential for maritime trade, yet the limited number of seaports has led to congestion concerns. Recognising this, the Ministry of Shipping plans to develop five components of Payra Port through PPP.

The strategic location of Payra Port, coupled with its integration into the national transportation grid, positions it as a key hub for cargo movement, particularly in the southwestern region.

Despite its strategic advantages, Payra Port faces challenges such as capacity limitations, competition from regional ports with superior infrastructure, and environmental considerations due to its sensitive location. However, ongoing expansion and modernisation initiatives, including the construction of a new container terminal, aim to address these challenges and enhance the port’s efficiency and capacity to handle cargo.
