Starting June 10, the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) at Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port is set to commence full operations with the berthing of container ships. Saudi Arabia's Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) Bangladesh Limited will facilitate vessel berthing at PCT.

The inaugural operation involves the handling of Maersk Davao, a Singapore-flagged carrier ship traveling from Port Klang, Malaysia. This vessel, with dimensions of 185.99 meters in length and 36 meters in width, signifies the beginning of operations at PCT.

This is as per reports, which added plans are also underway for RSGT to introduce gantry cranes by August 2025, enabling the handling of gearless vessels even as orders for ship handling equipment have already been placed, demonstrating preparations for seamless terminal operations.

With an increased capacity of 500,000 TEUs, the newly constructed terminal aims to alleviate congestion at Chittagong Port, offering relief to the port users.

It may be mentioned here Bangladesh has attracted several foreign operators, including PSA Singapore, AD Ports Group, DP World, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited, and APM Terminals, following the government's decision to invite foreign investments in the port sector.
