Bangladesh would consider the $450-million proposal by Danish shipping and logistics giant AP Moller Maersk’s subsidiary APM Terminals for constructing and operating a new container terminal at Laldia in Chattogram, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.

Maersk Group chief executive officer (CEO) Robert Maersk Uggla and Danish charges d’affaires in Bangladesh Andres B Karlsen met her recently in Dhaka.

The proposal has also evoked a positive response from the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), according to a newspaper report in the country.

The Chattogram port had previously initiated a public-private partnership project for the construction of a terminal in the Laldia Char area. However, it was later cancelled due to illegal encroachment. Eviction drives were initiated in 2019, but legal complications halted the process. After receiving clearance from the High Court, the Chittagong Port Authority resumed the eviction drive in 2021 and successfully recovered the land.

A top CPA official said the port is expecting foreign investments worth $7 billion in the next three years, with the Danish investment proposal serving as a significant contribution.

CPA has proposed that Maersk conduct a technical study for the construction of the new terminal.
