He made the appeal during a meeting with an ADB delegation at the BGMEA complex in capital Dhaka.
Faruque emphasised that improved logistics would reduce lead time and costs, enhancing trade competitiveness even as the discussions centred on Bangladesh’s RMG industry development alongside economic ramifications post its 2026 graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
The ADB delegation, comprising experts like Atul Sanganeria, Rina Oberai, Md. Rabiul Islam Rabi, and Barun Kumar Dey, delved into infrastructure’s pivotal role in sustaining Bangladesh’s manufacturing growth, especially within the RMG sector.
The BGMEA president elaborated on Bangladesh’s burgeoning manufacturing sector, targeting $100 billion from garment exports by 2030. Achieving this needs infrastructure upgrades, notably that of the ports, to accommodate increased trade volumes.
Acknowledging ADB’s help in the ongoing skills development programmes, Faruque stressed the impacts of technology on manufacturing even as he emphasised aligning skills with industrial trends and urged ADB’s support in preparing a skilled workforce, particularly for the apparel sector, to sustain Bangladesh’s competitiveness.
