China’s international trade logistics have shown significant resilience and stability this year, as per the country’s transport ministry official Wang Xiuchun. During the first eight months of 2023, Chinese ports recorded a total throughput for foreign trade of 3.34 billion tonnes—a 9.7 per cent increase compared to last year and a 16.9 per cent rise over the same period in pre-pandemic 2019.

Air freight also saw an uptick, with about 10.32 million tonnes of international cargo and mail being sent, marking a 4.9 per cent increase year-on-year (YoY). Furthermore, 1.26 million twenty-foot equivalent unit containers were transported via 86 freight train routes linking China to 217 European cities during the January to August period. This represents a 23 per cent increase compared to last year.

Wang underscored the enhanced goods-handling capabilities of China’s major land ports. Trade ports like Horgos and Suifenhe witnessed an 89.1 per cent surge in freight volume YoY in the previous month. He also noted that Chinese courier companies are expanding their global reach, bolstering China’s international delivery networks.
