  • Europe's total freight volumes dropped 3.7 per cent YoY in October to 3.6 million lane metres, or 5.7 per cent lower when adjusted for route changes, according to DFDS.
  • Softer demand, capacity shifts, and stronger competition affected performance, though YTD volumes stayed broadly stable.
  • Regional trends were mixed, and last-twelve-months freight rose 1 per cent to 41.5 million lane metres.
Europe’s total freight volumes fell to 3.6 million lane metres in October 2025, down 3.7 per cent from 2024 and 5.7 per cent lower when adjusted for route changes, according to Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab (DFDS). The decline reflects softer demand, capacity shifts, and heightened competitive pressure across several corridors. Year-to-date (YTD) performance remained relatively steady, easing 0.3 per cent, or 1.6 per cent on an adjusted basis.

Regional trends showed mixed momentum. North Sea volumes fell as most routes recorded softer activity, while Mediterranean traffic declined due to reduced capacity following intensified ferry competition. Channel volumes dropped amid a slowdown across the wider Dover Strait corridor. Baltic Sea volumes rose above 2024 levels, contrasting with the Strait of Gibraltar, where capacity changes pushed volumes lower.

On a last-twelve-months basis, total transported freight lane metres increased 1 per cent to 41.5 million, though adjusted for route changes the figure dipped 1.5 per cent.

DFDS operates a transport network across Europe.
