The increased tariff at Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port came into force today, causing huge disappointment to port users, who had called for the new tariff to be put on hold.

The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) usually collects tariffs across 52 service categories, including ship handling, among which, the new rates will be implemented directly in 23 sectors. The highest hike has been applied to container handling services.

The port will now collect fares, tolls, fees and charges based on the dollar exchange rate, which has been set at Tk 122 per dollar. The tariffs will automatically rise further if the exchange rate rises, according to domestic media outlets.

The CPA had announced last month that the hike would take effect immediately. But following strong protests from port users, shipping adviser Sakhawat Hossain put the decision on hold for a month till October 20.

However, a fresh notice confirmed that the revised tariffs will be implemented from October 15.

Foreign shipping companies involved in Bangladesh's exim trade have also announced additional surcharges.
