The freight transport unit, or net tonne kilometre (NTKM), of Indian Railways also achieved an impressive growth rate of 10 per cent to breach the 900-billion mark for the first time, reaching 903 billion NTKMs in FY23, compared to 820 billion NTKMs achieved the previous year, ministry of railways said in a press release.
Coal was the major contributor to this growth, with Indian Railways achieving an incremental loading of 74.6 MT, followed by 8.7 MT in other goods.
The gross freight revenues of Indian Railways are expected to be more than ₹1.6 lakh crore, with a growth rate of approximately 14 per cent.
