A new international freight train service via the China-Laos Railway has become operational after a train carrying cargo containers left Dazhou City, situated in southwest China’s Sichuan Province recently. The new route is expected to slash transport time from Dazhou to Southeast Asian countries like Myanmar, Malaysia, and Thailand to three to four days.

The train, which is headed to Vientiane—the capital of Laos, will travel through southwest China’s Chongqing municipality, Yunnan province, and northern Laos’ Luang Prabang enroute, according to various Chinese media reports. The recently launched freight train service will assist important local businesses in extending their market reach in the Indo-China Peninsula and Southeast Asia as well as expedite cargo collection from Sichuan and Chongqing.

Currently, 21 provinces and regions have introduced freight train services via the China-Laos Railway. The 1,000km-long railway network, which has been operational since December 3, 2021, connects Yunnan’s Kunming to Vientiane.
