Protectionism is the biggest political factor and threat affecting textile sourcing today, according to William E Connor, CEO of Hong Kong-based William E Connor and Associates Ltd, which offers logistics framework to textile and apparel firms. Legacy interests in industrialised nations have a habit of not going away and remain politically powerful, he said.

In an interview with Fibre2Fasdhion, Connor said while Bangladesh and Vietnam are seen as the two sourcing markets most likely to grow in importance in the next five years, regulation and lack of infrastructure hold India back despite the country having long-term potential because of its huge population.

China, India, Vietnam and Bangladesh remain top sourcing countries for sustainable apparel, home textiles, footwear and leather items, while health and safety issues can be challenges in these nations except China. (DS)
