Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz called for the textile industry to concentrate on value addition and research to get better market access globally.
He said that this industry was playing a major role in the country's economy and measures should be taken to develop it even further.
He praised the vision adopted by the government on this sector and said that now the private sector should also focus on value addition.
He stated this views to a visiting delegation of All Pakistan Textile Manufacturing Association (APTMA), at the Prime Minister's House, Saturday last.
He said research, study of the world trends and practices was significant to increase competitiveness and grab a larger market share.
Prime Minister added that government's policies of deregulation privatization, and liberalization coupled with sustainability of policies and transparency in procedures has created an upsurge in economy.
A very conducive atmosphere for the private sector has been created. However, the private sector needs to strive more to take full advantage of government policies.
He encouraged professional analysis to identify comparative advantages, and come up with concrete suggestions for the national cotton policy.
PM even identified some areas of concern and said the ginning industry has not been adequately developed.
There is a need to produce contamination free cotton and produce skilled manpower having the kind of expertise required for development of textile industry.
The problems faced by the industry due to shortage of gas supply were also discussed.
He concluded assuring full governmental support for the benefit of the textile industry.
