New York based shopping district Madison Avenue is stepping into Delhi and Mumbai. It's being billed as the ritziest mall yet in the two cities where only the world's best and biggest labels will figure.
Statutory warning: Don't step in unless your cards are platinum as belts and shoes are to start at Rs 25,000 and the cheapest suit on the rack will be Rs 1 lakh.
In Delhi, the big tag mall will come up in Vasant Kunj and in Mumbai it will be next to Race Course, the builder DLF says. The mall in Delhi is scheduled to open 2006 end and in Mumbai the next year.
Saks 5th Avenue - world's largest chain of luxury items - will be the anchor of the 3 lakh sq ft mall. The anchor shops will occupy 40,000 sq ft spread over three floors.
Other major brands to be marketed in the mall are Gucci, Burberry, Cartier, Fendi and Trussardi among others.
The builders hope that it will turn the cities into shopping marts for the world's rich and famous who anyway have started to list India as one of the business venues.
MD of DLF Retail Developers Ltd Pia Singh said the mall has been designed to be the best in the world. ''It will provide the luxury environment to give the best of the experiences to the shoppers.''
It's not just the dazzle of names in the mall. The ambience and design is also meant to keep step, said CEO of Emporio Kajal Aijaz. The lighting inside will keep changing through the day and so will the colour of a water fountain in the main foyer to match with the lighting.
