Nigerian textile companies are losing business due to cheap and sub-standard fabrics imports.
Country's textile industry has been suffering mainly because of smuggling, informed The Textile, Garment and Tailoring Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers.
Till now 60 companies have shut down, said Ismaila Adeyemi, President of the Textile, Garment and Tailoring Senior Staff Association.
Since Nigeria entered into World Trade Organization (WTO), its employment in textile industry has dropped to 57,000 from 140,000 seven years ago.
Local industry's market had been declined 27 percent due to imported fabrics.
Nasiru Lawal, President, National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers, said that Government should close the borders with neighboring countries to curtail the banned fabric imports.
