Handloom industry is now becoming competitive and lucrative and it is no more facing challenges from its immediate rival powerloom sector.

These unique warp and woof woven fabrics are very popular among Japanese importers.

These handloom products cannot be duplicated by mill sector as they are made by unique hand weaving styles.

Having specialties, Japanese importers are attracted to buy domestic products and their buying behaviour has also changed.

Earlier Japanese were buying textile products from China but now they have shifted their focus to India, which is healthy sign for development.

Another reason for Japan's shift to India is they now prefer handloom products in silk, flex and jute apart from usual cotton.

In 2005-06, country's total handloom exports were Rs2,500 crore of which only 4-7 percent went to Japan and rest of to the US and the EU.
