Czech Association of Textile, Clothing and Leather Industries (ATOK) revealed that the garment and clothing sales were adversely affected by increased prices and cheap imports from China.

In the first six months of 2006, the sales recorded 16.67 percent year-on-year drop to CZK5.07 billion.

Sales of textile declined four percent to CZK23.08 billion.

Meanwhile, Chinese textile imports climbed to CZK645.4 million last year, while imports of clothing grew to nearly CZK2.5 billion.

Textile and clothing companies employed nearly 63,000 people at the end of June, a decrease of six percent against the end of last year, with a negligible one percent rise in monthly wages to reach CZK12,200.
