Garment industry associations have asked Government to help out the garment manufacturers in Cebu who are fragmented to increase productivity and efficiency of the industry.
President of Cebu Garment Industry Association (CGIA), Minerva Yuvienco informed that garment manufacturers from the region contribute a great deal to country's export but the small units are struggling to survive.
Even though garment is the second highest export earner accounting for 3.77 percent of total exports, the Government has shifted its focus to sectors like tourism.
Japan is the biggest market followed by Taiwan and Yuvienco informed that high cost of production, increase in minimum wages and declining Government support is killing the industry growth.
The fall in local market has been attributed to inflow of cheap imports and smuggling items from other Asian countries like China.
