PM urges textile sector to gear up for global challenges

Presiding over the first meeting of National Textile Strategy Committee, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has emphasized the need to redefine the textile industry in order to make it more competitive and sustainable.

Stressing the importance of textile sector in country's economy, he said that it contributes 66 percent in country's exports, 40 percent to employment and 8.5 percent in the GDP proving to be the vital organ of the economy.

Keeping this in mind, Government is going to do everything it can to sustain itself.

He asked the industry to come up with plans to increase production of cotton and improve productivity and competitiveness of the sector.

He asked the committee to evaluate trade diplomacy and market access policies and then recommend measures.

The committee consists of relevant Government Ministries/departments, representatives of private sector and academia.

The textile strategy targets to cross the production target of 20.7 million bales of cotton by 2015.

The committee also emphasizes the need to enhance the infrastructural facilities like transportation and better communication facilities along with technological advancement.
