Owing to price hike of threads and raw materials, minimum 20,000 handlooms of Nabinagar and Banchharampur areas of Bangladesh have stopped working. These areas are famous for lungis, napkins and sarees.
If prices of thread and raw materials keep increasing, handloom owners and traders fear shut down of most handlooms operating in few months. Prices of thread and materials used in handlooms have increased by 20 to 25 percent in last six months, but prices of products haven't been improved.
Information provided by traders shows that price of 82/1 count thread has gone up from Tk54,000 to Tk66,000, Saiham from 56,000 to 67,000, thread of 74/1 count from 51,000 to 63,000, Nahid from 53,000 to 63,000 and Rasel from 54,000 to 66,000.
Price of polyester has gone up from 36,000 to 40,000 while that of Palex from 28,000 to 36,000.
A saree costing 200 would bring profit of about 20 to 30 to handloom owners in previous times, but now production of sarees incur losses.
