Meanwhile the cooperation has also brought business opportunity to China. In late 1970s, trade with ASEAN was only 4 percent of foreign trade amount, but gained to 9 percent in 2005.
Although the population of ASEAN only half of that of China, GDP is almost similar. So for China, ASEAN represents a huge market.
Besides, with increasing interest, China is willing to support and actively participate into the multilateral cooperation mechanism, which was designed and initiated by ASEAN.
From the launch of bilateral dialogue in 1991 to the establishment of strategic partners' relationship by the end of 2003, China joined ASEAN as a guest adopting the natives' custom in a period of thirteen years.
