Garment factories surpass manufacturing norms

According to a US-based environmental consulting firm, Saipan garment factories consume energy and water in excess and generate industrial waste above normal level.

Study reveals that Saipan uses an average of 435 kWh of energy for every 1000 garments produced, whereas the benchmark for this much production is 271 kWh.

Similarly in case of water and solid waste, it exceeds 687 gallons and 74 pounds for every 1000 garment pieces.

Even garment workers living in company-provided accomodation has an average daily energy usage of 4.55 kWh and 72.3 gallons of water and benchmarks for these are 2.99 kWh and 55.6 gallons respectively.
