Lack of orders forces apparel units to shutdown

Gil M San Nicolas, Secretary, Department of Labour, informed that presently only 21 apparel units are left in Saipan. Concorde Garment Manufacturing Inc closed operations on December 12, 2006.

Main reason for factories shutting down rapidly is insufficiency of garment production orders.

He added that as per department's statistics, factories which are still functional include American Pacific Textile, Commonwealth Garment Manufacturing Inc, Grace International Inc, Hansae Manufacturing Inc, etc.

Nicolas stated that 11 apparel factories, including Advanced Textile Corporation, Diorva Saipan Limited and Eurotex Inc, have been shut down between 2002 and 2006.
