Despite the fact there are around 20 million over-weight women in the age group of 20-45 in China, there is a huge shortage of plus size clothing in the local market. Thus, Chinese apparel manufacturers are missing out on a business opportunity that can rake in as much as 35 billion yuan.
Some international brands, like those from Taiwan, have smelt the opportunity and have quietly entered Shanghai markets. Even though prices of these branded plus size clothes are anything between 2,000-3,000 yuan per piece, Chinese customers have welcomed them with open arms. This just goes on to show the high demand for over size clothing.
Of late, some Chinese brands have caught up with this growing apparel trend. O.C.T. MAMI, a brand owned by Shanghai Youxi Company, has recently introduced clothes for plus size women. O.C.T. MAMI mainly produces maternity clothes.
