Mariana Islands are a group of 14 tropical islands situated in the Western Pacific Ocean. Saipan is the capital with a total area of 115.39 square miles and a population of around 62392.
Saipan is home to a number of industries, which also include garment manufacturing industries. The industry contributed nearly $60 million in direct taxes. Due to competition from a number of low cost countries the garment industry has found the going difficult.
In the recent past a number of garment industries have closed down. But the contract workers who come from neighboring countries like China, Thailand, Bangladesh and Vietnam have opted to stay on in the island and look for alternative employment within & outside the garment industry.
The other reasons citied by the owners is the minimum wage fixed by Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), lack of orders and increasing cost of doing business. The garment workers will be able to transfer themselves to other garment units and in case the same is not available they may opt for non garment units subject to their being found fit for the same.
