Knitters claim revision of yarn import procedures

Bangladesh knitwear producers have demanded a reduction in the complexity of yarn import procedures, especially through Benapole land port. This step was taken in a bid to deal with the rising prices of goods in the domestic market.

Official from Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) also urged the Government to ease the process of import of yarn through Benapole.

Although, the Government has removed all bans on import of yarn through this route, the port is hardly used by manufacturers due to customs difficulties, bond licenses and transportation.

Experts firmly believe that Bangladesh would benefit tremendously from the international market if the import procedures are evened out.

However, some other industry officials are of the opinion that import of yarn by a section of knitters is likely to encourage smuggling of the item into the country.

Besides, exporters are also afraid that continuous rise in the prices of yarn in local market may reduce the competitiveness of Bangladesh knitwear and readymade garments (RMG) industry in the global scenario.

Nonetheless, yarn producers are helpless and accuse the rising cost of raw materials for the growing crisis.
