The industry believes that large number of leather manufacturers are likely to adopt environment-friendly leather chemical materials helping it to become a major trend in 2008.

Currently, a variety of environment-friendly chemical raw materials are being used extensively in leather production and the imported ones are particularly welcomed by enterprises. For example, chrome powder from Turkey and the US are used by large tanneries in Guangzhou.

Most pig leather manufacturers introduce domestic and imported non-azo dyes to replace azo dyes, while cowhide manufacturers have started to use imported dyes according to requirements of export orders.

According to experts, there are several reasons for environment-friendly chemical materials to take on the entire leather market.

Firstly, China being a large leather producing country, the requirement for improving the grades was must, as the domestic consumption for the same has increased. Thus, in recent years, standards of leather products have ameliorated.

Secondly, after the accession to WTO, country started exporting leather products in large quantities. In the international markets, testing standards of exported leather products are more stringent. Particularly, countries like Germany, US, South Korea and Japan give high importance to eco-friendly products.

Further, countries are now becoming more cautious regarding the global atmosphere. With increasing hue and cries for environment protection, China is now focusing on pollution control. The use of environment-friendly leather chemical materials will reduce difficulties in control measures.
