Knitwear exports surpass shipments from woven sector

Bangladesh had been a rising star in the global apparel market during the past two decades, with the knitwear industry seeing a phenomenal growth. Presently, knitwear apparels from Bangladesh are exported to 90 countries; worldwide.

Knitwear industry in Bangladesh is currently outperforming the woven sector. The main reason behind this performance is the country's perfect backward linkages. 90% of the total fabric requirement of knitwear industries is being met by the local manufacturers.

On the contrary, woven manufacturers mainly depend on the imports. Export figures for 2007/08 provide ample evidence for the drastic growth of knitwear industry.

The overall market growth of clothing industry of Bangladesh experiences a year-on-year 20% growth rate, with the knitwear industry going through a period of unparalleled expansion.
