Bangladesh’s ministry of industries is formulating a Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Policy 2025 to raise their contribution to the economy, according to SME Foundation chairperson Mohammad Mushfiqur Rahman.

The 2019 SME Policy will expire soon. The new five-year SME Policy is scheduled to come into effect in July this year and end in June 2030, he said.

The draft policy includes 10 strategic objectives, Rahman told a recent workshop on the opportunities and challenges of the policy organised by the foundation and backed by the Economic Reporters' Forum (ERF).

SMEs contribute nearly 28 per cent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and account for about 85 per cent of employment in the industrial sector, the chairperson said.

The foundation has identified 177 SME clusters and is implementing various development programmes to address the needs of cluster-based entrepreneursm he was cited as saying by domestic media reports.

Rahman said the new SME policy will play a key role in raising the contribution of SMEs to GDP to 35 per cent by 2030.
