Bangladesh’s general point-to-point inflation rate eased further for the fifth consecutive month in January this year, dropping to 8.57 per cent from 8.71 per cent in December due to a fall in both food and non-food inflation figures. Point-to-point non-food inflation declined slightly to 9.84 per cent in January from 9.96 per cent in December.

The general point-to-point inflation rate in November last year was 8.85 per cent, according to the monthly consumer price index of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

State minister for planning Shamsul Alam said the falling inflation rate is an indicator of a more active and vibrant economy, and the country's export earnings were much higher during the July-December period compared to the same period in 2021, according to Bangladeshi media reports.

The latest hike in the price of gas and electricity may affect inflation in the coming months, he added.

The general point-to-point inflation in the urban areas declined to 8.39 per cent in January from 8.43 per cent in December.
