The Bangladesh commerce ministry has set up a technical committee to formulate an integrated national transit policy for the first time.

The committee, comprising representatives from the ministries of commerce, railways, road transport and bridges, shipping, foreign affairs, and the National Board of Revenue and the Bangladesh Land Port Authority, is headed by joint secretary Mohammad Abdus Samad Al Azad.

The decision was taken at a meeting in Dhaka yesterday with senior commerce secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh in the chair.

The policy will help coordinate the work of all ministries and organisations. Transit expansion activities will be undertaken with neighbouring countries as well, Ghosh was quoted as saying by domestic media reports.

A feasibility study on transit policy is being conducted by the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission, he said.

After the committee reviews all the issues and finalises a draft policy, it will be placed in the cabinet meeting.

The country is working to expand transit and communication via rail, road and waterways not only to South Asia, but also to East Asian countries.
