Bangladesh finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal recently requested Malaysian deputy finance minister YB Dato’ Indear Moha Shar Abdullah to quickly sign the free trade agreement (FTA) proposed 11 years ago. It is widely expected that such an FTA Malaysia could be the gateway for Bangladeshi exports to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market.

He also urged Abdullah to take further measures to hire more manpower from Bangladesh. He met the Malaysian leader at a meeting held alongside the annual general meeting of the Asian Development Bank in Manila.

In fiscal 2020-21, Bangladesh’s export earnings from Malaysia stood at $306 million against imports worth $1.57 billion, Kamal was quoted as saying by Bangladeshi media reports.
