The State Council Tariff Commission, in its Announcement No. 6 of 2025, confirmed the adjustment would take effect from April 12, 2025. The announcement comes just a day after Washington introduced the same 125 per cent rate on Chinese imports, under what it termed a ‘reciprocal tariff’ framework.
Beijing condemned the US measure as a violation of international trade rules and a form of “unilateral bullying and coercion”, warning that such policies disregard global economic norms and could have long-term repercussions.
A statement from the Chinese government asserted that, at the current tariff level, US goods have lost market viability in China, adding that if Washington continues its tariff escalation, Beijing will respond resolutely.
