China has announced retaliatory tariffs on certain US imports following the US government’s decision to impose a 10 per cent tariff on Chinese goods. Effective from February 10, 2025, China will impose a 15 per cent tariff on US coal and liquefied natural gas, along with a 10 per cent tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, large-displacement cars, and pickup trucks.

In addition to tariffs, China has placed PVH Corp., the parent company of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, on its unreliable entity list. The move follows allegations of PVH boycotting cotton from China’s Xinjiang region, which has been under scrutiny. US biotech company Illumina Inc. has also been blacklisted, and China has introduced export controls on tungsten-related materials.

China’s Ministry of Commerce condemned the US tariffs as a violation of World Trade Organization rules, warning that they would disrupt trade relations and global supply chains. This escalation signals renewed trade tensions between the world’s largest economies, with potential further retaliatory measures on the horizon.
