EU jobless rate at 5.9%, euro area steady at 6.2% in June

Unemployment across the euro area remained unchanged at 6.2 per cent in June 2025, according to the latest figures released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. The figure reflects a modest improvement from 6.4 per cent in June 2024.

For the broader EU, the unemployment rate stood at 5.9 per cent in June, also stable compared to May 2025 and slightly lower than the 6 per cent rate recorded a year earlier.

In absolute terms, Eurostat estimates that 12.967 million people in the EU were unemployed in June 2025, with 10.700 million of them in the euro area. This marks a decline of 23,000 jobseekers in the EU and 62,000 in the euro area compared with May 2025. On an annual basis, unemployment dropped by 125,000 in the EU and by 293,000 in the euro area.

Youth unemployment, however, continues to pose a significant challenge. A total of 2.857 million persons under the age of 25 were unemployed in the EU, including 2.241 million in the euro area. The youth unemployment rate held steady at 14.7 per cent across the EU and declined marginally to 14.1 per cent in the euro area, down from 14.3 per cent in May.

Compared with May 2025, youth unemployment fell by 4,000 in the EU and by 34,000 in the euro area. Over the past year, youth unemployment declined by 25,000 in the EU and by 85,000 in the euro area, Eurostat said in a release.

Labour market outcomes also showed some gender variation. In the EU, the unemployment rate for women fell to 6 per cent in June from 6.1 per cent in May, while the rate for men remained stable at 5.7 per cent.

In the euro area, the jobless rate among women eased to 6.4 per cent from 6.5 per cent, while the rate for men remained unchanged at 6 per cent.
