The Federation of Surat Textile Traders’ Association (FOSTTA) recently asked textile market managements to comply with fire safety norms to protect markets from fire incidents. The federation will convene a meeting of such managements to offer them necessary instructions regarding fire safety measures. The city fire department finds it tough in enter many markets.

The decision followed mock drill exercise in the textile markets located on Ring Road by the Surat Municipal Corporation’s fire and emergency services department to identify obstacles, according to a report in a top English-language daily.

FOSTTA says the majority of the markets located on Ring Road were constructed 30 years ago.

A massive fire broke out in the Raghuvir textile market in Surat a few days back, with flames engulfing a substantial part of the 10-storey building by the time fire tenders reached the spot. The blaze spread from the bottom floors after fire in one of the shops and spread fast due to the presence of highly combustible polyester fabrics.
