India can have as many as 50,000 registered start-ups by 2024 as the eco-system grows, said minister for commerce and Industry and railways Piyush Goyal. While speaking at the fifth edition of The Economic Times’ Start-up Awards recently, he said he was pleased by Snapdeal founder Kunal Bahl’s remark that start-ups wanted no government intervention.

“I truly believe that this is one ecosystem that is defining India across the world. There are 21,000 start-ups already registered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade and the speed at which we are growing, my own sense is, we will be able to touch 50,000 by 2024,” the newspaper quoted the minister as saying.

The government, he said, will listen to the issues faced by the industry and introduce measures to push growth. He also appreciated the ambitious and ‘audacious’ goals of start-ups. (DS)a
