India and China should deepen cooperation to fight trade protectionism following the ‘unilateral’ US approach on trade disputes in the name of ‘national security’ and ‘fair trade’, will affect China’s economic development and undermine India’s external environment and hinder its booming economy, the Chinese Embassy in India recently said.

Referring to comments by President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to safeguard the multilateral trading system and free trade at the World Economic Forum in Davos, embassy spokesperson Counselor Ji Rong said facing unilateralism and bullying activities, both the countries have more reasons to join efforts to build a more just and reasonable international order.

The United States should reflect on its own practice of interfering in the internal affairs of developing countries like China and India under the pretext of human rights and religious matters, a news agency quoted Ji as saying.

China is firmly against attempts to use the so-called Indo-Pacific strategy as a tool to counter China, he added. (DS)
