India is in dialogue with the US for a bilateral trade agreement, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has reiterated.

Goyal also highlighted that India is broadening its global trade footprint, having already finalised FTAs with Mauritius, Australia (first tranche), the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) bloc, the UK, and the UAE, while negotiations continue with the EU, Chile, Peru, New Zealand, Australia (second tranche), and Oman, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a press release.

This was said by the minister at Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) 20th Global Sustainability Summit in New Delhi, today.

The discussions, which began in March, have already seen five rounds completed.

The sixth round of trade negotiations between India and the US remains unscheduled after Washington postponed its planned visit, which was originally set for August 25.

The delay follows the US' decision to levy a 50 per cent tariff on Indian exports from August 27 as a penalty for continuing to buy Russian oil.
