Job openings rates rise in 10 US states, DC on 30 Dec 2022, fall in 1

Job openings rates increased in 10 US states and the District of Columbia (DC) and decreased in one state on the last business day of December 2022, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS). Hires rates increased in four states. Nationally, the job openings rate increased in December while the hires and total separations rates showed little or no change.

Total separations rates increased in seven states and decreased in six.

The largest increases in job openings rates occurred in North Dakota (plus 1.6 percentage points), as well as in Michigan and Minnesota (plus 1.3 points each). The decrease occurred in Georgia (minus 0.6 point). Over the month, the national job openings rate increased by 0.3 points.

The number of job openings increased in 13 states and DC, decreased in one state, and was little changed in 36 states in December. The largest increases in the job openings level occurred in Texas (plus 116,000), as well as in Illinois and Michigan (plus 64,000 each).

The decrease in the job openings level occurred in Georgia (minus 35,000). Nationally, the number of job openings increased over the month (plus 572,000).

In December, hires rates increased in four states and were little changed in 46 states and DC. The increases in hires rates occurred in Missouri (plus 1.6 percentage points) and Minnesota (plus 0.9 point), as well as in Illinois and Michigan (plus 0.6 point each). The national hires rate was little changed over the month.

In December, total separations rates increased in seven states, decreased in six, and were little changed in 37 states and DC. The largest increases in total separations rates occurred in Idaho (plus 1 percentage point), Missouri (plus 0.7 point) and South Carolina (plus 0.6 point). The largest decreases occurred in Alaska (minus 1.2 points), Arkansas (minus 0.7 point) and Arizona (minus 0.6 point). Over the month, the national total separations rate was unchanged.

The number of total separations increased in four states, decreased in five, and was little changed in 41 states and DC during the month.

The largest increases in the total separations level occurred in Missouri (plus 21,000), New Jersey (plus 18,000) and Indiana (plus 17,000). The largest decreases occurred in Illinois (minus 29,000), North Carolina (minus 24,000), and Washington  (minus 17,000). Nationally, the number of total separations was little changed over the month.

In December, layoffs and discharges rates increased in seven US states, decreased in seven and were little changed in 36 states and DC.

The largest increases in layoffs and discharges rates occurred in Missouri (plus 0.7 percentage point) and Indiana (plus 0.6 point), as well as in Iowa, New Jersey, and Oklahoma (plus 0.4 point each). The largest decreases in layoffs and discharges rates occurred in Alaska (minus 1.3 points), Colorado (minus 1 point), and New Mexico (minus 0.7 point). Over the month, the national layoffs and discharges rate was little changed.
