Andhra Pradesh Federation of Textile Associations has given a call for a complete shutdown by textile traders on July 20 to protest against the government's move of levying four percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on textiles in the State.
The call for strike was given at a meeting attended by around 400 textile traders and representatives of several textile associations from across the State.
The meeting also agreed to observe a relay hunger-strike and to carry out protest marches for seven consecutive days beginning July 20.
In order to continue and strengthen the protest, the Federation has resolved to urge the Chief Minister, Finance Minister, Congress High Command in Centre and the Governor to rollback the duty. They would send telegrams to these authorities citing their inability to withstand the four percent VAT.
The textile body has also resolved to obtain letters of support from MLAs, MPs and MLCs of several districts to push for rollback of the duty.
The traders would conduct protest marches all through the week since July 20 onwards to MLA and Collector's offices to gain support for their movement.
The State government through a government order (GO) dated July 8, 2011 imposed VAT on textiles in the State.
