Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the state would soon come up with an integrated textile policy aimed at boosting the industry that contributes 23 percent to the state’s GDP.

Addressing the garment entrepreneurs at the 20th Gujarat Garment Manufacturers Association's National Garment Fair in Ahmedabad, Mr. Modi said the state needs a policy, which can look beyond the interests of cotton cultivators or spinners.

The proposed policy, he said, would raise the state’s competitiveness and provide it a level playing field with other textile and garment producing destinations in the country.

He said the state needs a policy, which can focus beyond the individual interests of the cotton cultivators, ginners, or yarn and fabric makers. As such, a policy concerning the whole textile value chain from cotton to readymade apparels to exports would soon be introduced, he said.

According to Mr. Modi, to develop the local textile industry and make it globally competitive, the state needs to develop a cluster-approach.

Also, focusing on traditional fashion, the textile industry should try to undertake a plausible branding exercise to attract international clients, he added.

Besides being a leading cotton producing state, Gujarat has also achieved expertise in production of denim and man-made fabrics, and has also progressed in technical textiles sector.
