Textile, apparel goods and other traditional areas of export have witnessed a decline after the elimination of WTO quota system last year, said Shaukat Aziz, Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Exports of manmade fibre trousers, knit shirts and dressing gowns and robes also have gone down by as much as 72 percent.

This situation has a great bearing on socio-economic troubles of Pakistan, where textile and apparel industries employ 35-40 percent of all manufacturing labour and amounts to 9 percent of total gross domestic product (GDP), Aziz added.

To overcome this situation, Pakistan has taken several measures to enhance the competitiveness of its textile and apparel goods.

Speaking at a function in New York, Aziz stated that these measures are to improve production quality and quantity, bring more foreign investment, and improve shipment speed and security.

Pakistan has started comprehensive measures to attract foreign investments in local textile industry.

In this connection, Government of Pakistan will take steps to improve infrastructural and administrative facilities like railroads, highways and ports, and customs clearance.
