MCC tells Textile Ministry to add handloom and powerloom sectors reps on panel

City-based Merchants' Chamber of Commerce (MCC) has urged the Textiles ministry to reconstitute the 11-member committee formed to finalise the standards for stamping and marking.

MCC President Aditya Agarwal expressed dismay over the fact that handloom and powerloom sectors have no representation in the committee, despite contributing more than 90 per cent of the fabrics manufactured in India.

There is no representative from the eastern region in the panel formed by the textiles commissioner, he said in a letter to Textiles Minister Shankersinh Vaghela urging the minister to re-constitute the panel.

The committee includes three members from the government, two from consumers, and one each representing manufacturers, exporters and importers, while three other members represented the composite textiles sector.
