Textile industry must consider processing as a critical stage of value chain that decides quality of fabric and apparel, commented an industry expert.

Processing industry must adopt modern approach as biggest growth in revenue of $23.5 billion (360 percent) would come from clothing export followed by textile export, said G V Aras ATE Marketing Private Limited Senior Vice President.

In its modernization move, industry should build capacity using technology, scale of operations, product innovations, business process, people management and environment management, he added.

While the imports of fabric showed a growth of 33 percent CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) standing at 585 million square metres in 2003-04, the production showed a growth of two percent at 42 billion square metres in 2003-04, he said.

There is 118 percent value addition in processing of woven fabrics and 116 percent in processing of knitted fabrics.
