Thailand Government to evaluate its labour policy to cope with scarcity hampering industrial growth, said Vice Commerce Minister Suvit Maesincee.
To deal with the crises of scarcity, Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Somkid Jatusripitak would talk to Labour Minister Somsak Thepsuthin to consider hiring foreign labour as an interim solution.
In the textile sector, about 60,000 workers are in demand, while the jewellery industry requires 90,000 people in the next five years.
Suvit said that for the short term, Thailand might have to rely on labour from neighbouring countries, but for the long term, companies need to launch automated production lines to compensate labour scarcity.
The government has introduced a plan to improve the capability of textile and garment manufacturers to meet global competitiveness.
Suvit said these industries needed to increase competence to compete with China and India, which are world leaders in these areas.
He also stressed on the need of stronger link between the textile and garments sectors to minimize manufacturing costs.
Industry can also promote Thai textile production beyond borders by establishing overseas commercial offices.
Moreover, Suvit said companies planned to set up a laboratory to develop textiles and would need to inject Bt500 million into the industry.
