The use of insect-resistant biotech cotton variety has helped to raise farm income in India by almost Rs 558 crore, said an agro economist.
Indian farmers income are as per the global trend due to the use of biotech cotton variety, said Graham Brookes, Director of UK-based consulting firm PG Economics.
Biotech crops have increased cotton farm income of the world by 5.7 billion dollar and helped in decreasing pesticide use by 14 per cent.
Biotech crops have contributed to greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, he said.
This has been due to fuel use decrease and additional soil carbon sequestration resulting from reduced ploughing associated with biotech crops, he explained.
