Tamil Nadu (TN) plans to achieve 18 percent annual growth in textile sector by 2010, taking 8 percent share in the expected national export figure of $50 billion.
In this connection, state's cloth production has targeted to reach 27000 million square metre mark from present production of 11500 million square metre.
This amounts to a 27 percent of the national production, informed A Elangovan, Secretary, Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Department.
Speaking about growth in Bangladesh and Pakistan, he said the two countries were way ahead of India with hi-tech machineries like shuttleless looms used to produce high quality cloth.
Moreover, in those countries import of textile machinery was very easy and duty free.
Adding further, he said the Union textile ministry should reduce import duty of used machinery. It should be actual cost and not derived price like Rs10 lakh.
