General Assembly passed two bills this year (House Bill 1499 and Senate Bill 535) making the Economic Crisis Strike Force permanent.

Governor Tim Kaine signed the legislation Tuesday in Galax, which is suffering from the recent losses of furniture and textile jobs.

Former Governor Mark Warner had issued an executive order in 2002 creating the strike force, which coordinates state and local assistance efforts in communities affected by major job losses or natural disasters.

Moreover, Sara Lee Branded Apparel announced the planned lay-off of 332 textile workers at its Galax unit last week.
