State budget proposals evoke mixed response

There were mixed responses to the state budget from industry and trade associations with criticism for increase in various taxes whereas others approving the boost provided to agriculture, power and infrastructure.

Digvijay Kapadia, President, All India Federation of Cloth Retailers' Associations, said, there were expectation for abolishing of octroi but instead a committee is to be set up to review octroi.

According to WTO guidelines after implementing VAT no other taxes can be introduced but this was not the case in this budget.

Hemant Rathi, Senior Vice-President, Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture, observed that increasing motor vehicle tax may not beneficial in the long run.

Study group to review all non-tax registrations and licenses and a new investment policy to upgrade infrastructure are appreciable only if it takes place at the proper time, said Dhananjay Bele, President, Ambad Industries and Manufacturers' Association.
