Cotton yarn diverted from exports for local consumption

Brazil's cotton yarn is being diverted from exports and is being ploughed back into domestic market.

Cotton yarn exports dropped 43.0 percent compared to previous year with export volumes reaching just 1,066 tons in February 2006.

Argentina emerged as the main importer of Brazilian yarn in February but registered a volume decline by 26 percent, exporting just 578 tons.

Cumulative cotton yarn export volume for January through February period to Argentina went down 16.2 percent with exports at 1,511 tons.

Argentina was a strong market in 2005 for Brazil, with exports up 79.1 percent at 13,986.4 tons.

Cotton yarn exports to the United States continues to show a downward trend with export rounding off to only 192.8 tons in February, a straight 64.2 percent drop compared to previous year.

Exports to Chile and Peru too, have recorded sharp decline.
